How long does a small business website take? (and what slows it down)

Most owners want to know one thing before they hire anyone: how long until it is live? A fair answer is days to a few weeks for a small business site, not months. What decides it is rarely the designer. It is how quickly the content and decisions arrive.
The four steps
- Brief. You tell us about your business, your customers, and what the site must do (book, sell, collect enquiries). We agree the pages and the plan.
- Design. We build the layout for your industry, with your branding, photos and words in place.
- Review. You look at it on your computer and phone, tell us what to change, and we update it. One or two rounds is normal.
- Launch. We connect your domain, set up hosting, test the forms and booking, and go live. After that we look after it.
What a realistic timeline looks like
These are our targets, not guarantees, and they assume you reply promptly:
- A simple site (Launch plan): often live within days of receiving your content.
- A fuller site with booking or quotes (Growth plan): usually one to two weeks.
- An online store (Store plan): usually two to three weeks, depending on how many products you have.
What slows a website down
In our experience the delays are almost always these:
- Waiting for photos. Good photos of your real space, team or work make the biggest difference to how professional a site looks. Phone photos taken in good light are fine to start.
- Waiting for words. Owners often find writing about themselves the hardest part. We can draft it from a short conversation, which is much faster.
- Too many decision-makers. Three people giving three different opinions on a headline can add a week. Agree who has the final say.
- Changing the brief halfway. Adding a store or five new pages mid-build resets the clock.
- Domain and email access. If you cannot find the login to your domain, expect a day or two to recover it. Look before you start.
Your checklist to launch faster
Have these ready before we begin:
- Your business name, address, phone number and opening hours.
- Your logo, if you have one (we can work without it).
- Ten to fifteen photos of your place, team or work.
- A list of your services and, where possible, prices.
- Two or three real customer reviews you are happy to show.
- Your domain registrar login, if you already own a domain.
After launch
Going live is the start, not the end. Your monthly plan covers hosting, updates and fixes, so changing your hours or adding a service is a message, not a project.
